George Gunderson

George Gunderson, 94, of Baker, passed away Friday, February 27, 2004 at Quality Personal Care. He was born December 22, 1909 on the homestead one mile south of Baker, the son of John and Johanna (Birkeland) Gunderson. George grew up and attended schools in Baker. He began work at young age, mainly threshing. He entered the US Army at Butte in 1942. During his years in military service he spent most of his time in South Africa with the Provisional Pipeline Operation and Maintenance Dept. He was quite proud of his unit and their contribution to WW II. George was honorably discharged in 1944. On December 22, 1944, he married Freda Hoffman in Minneapolis, MN. They made their way back where they began to farm one and a half miles south of Baker. Throughout his life, George was very active in several organizations including, Montana Grain Growers Association, the American Legion, and the Last Man?s Club (WW II Veterans). Many will remember him for being a talented craftsman. Often he could make something productive out of nothing. George always seemed to have new idea or creative invention. Many items that were precious to George are on display to this day at the Old Fallon Museum. His last years were spent at Quality Care. He enjoyed his time there immensely and had many fond memories with the residents and staff. George?s presence will be missed greatly. His parents; wife, Freda; a brother, Sam; and two sisters, Jennie and Ida precede him in death. George is survived by a brother, Martin (Lucille) Gunderson of Baker; a sister, Esther Jones of Baker; four nephews: Greg (Judy) Gunderson, Mike (Dorinda) Gunderson, Brian Gunderson, all of Baker, and Tom (Cindy) Gunderson of Yuma, CO; four nieces: Velora (Frank) Strom of Williston, ND, Marcella (Rod) Enos of Pocatello, ID, Barbara (Ranger) Duikema of Manhattan, MT and Ida Chamberlain of Dinuba, CA; sixteen great nieces & nephews; and six great-great nieces & nephews.
