George Jurgens

George Jurgens, 88, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at the Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital in San Andreas, California. Funeral services are 2 p. m. , Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Taylor, with Pastor Tim Voth officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Cemetery, rural Taylor, with military rites provided by Joseph V. Lautz VFW Post #7438. Visitation will be 1 p. m. to 9 p. m. , Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with a prayer service with sharing of memories at 7 p. m Visitation will continue Thursday at the church one hour prior to the service. George Jurgens was born April 6, 1917, on the family farm in rural Taylor, ND, the youngest of ten born to Herman and Bertha (Sibbert) Jurgens. George grew up on the family farm, attended country grade school and graduated from Taylor High School in 1935. George married Lucille McKirdy in 1939. In 1941, George moved west to work at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington. After the death of his wife, Lucille and infant son Glen in 1941, he joined the Navy and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. George married Ann Brocco in 1943 and after the war, they settled in Alameda, California to further his education and to work at the Alameda Naval Air Station as a jet engine mechanic/supervisor until his retirement in 1975. In April of 1998, George married his high school sweetheart, Leota (Jacobs) Perhus. They spent the summer months living in Taylor, ND and the winters in Auburn, CA. Later they moved to Angels Camp, CA to be closer to George?s son and family. George was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Taylor and was a deacon and board member of the Congregational Church in Alameda, CA. He was an active member of the Appollo/Woodstock Masonic Lodge and recently received his 50 year pin. George was twice a master of his lodge, involved in the grand lodge in San Francisco. He served as an officer?s coach for over 20 years and received the renowned Hiram award. George loved to build and create things out of burl wood, including clocks and lamps. George also enjoyed gardening and was proud of his orchids and roses. George was a loving and caring husband and father, so willing to lend a helping hand with a cute sense of humor. George is survived by his wife of seven years, Leota; one son, Mark (Laurie) Jurgens, Angels Camp, CA; one daughter, Jean (Darrell) Hunt, Alameda, CA; one sister-in-law, Martha Jurgens, Belfield, ND; four grandchildren, Lisa (Hunt) Peters, Covington, WA, Rachel (Jurgens) Kaua, Angels Camp, CA, Jody Jurgens and Kurt Jurgens, both of Angels Camp, CA; three great-grandchildren, Dalton Kaua, Kaylan and Ciera Peters; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents; one sister, Margaret Thomas, and eight brothers, Carl, Herman, Louie, John, Ray, Fred, Elmer and Bill. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: Immanuel United Church of Christ, 11 2nd St. W. , Taylor, ND 58656, or a charity of the donor?s choice.
