Opp was born August 26, 1925, to John K. and Margaret (Blatz) Opp in Glen Ullin, ND. George grew up on the family homestead seven miles northeast of Glen Ullin and attended country school. George enlisted in the United States Navy near the end of World War II and later served in the United States Army as part of the 35th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Division during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Army, George returned to North Dakota, where he worked for Ed Richter and later for the Garrison Diversion Project. He started his water well drilling business in 1953 and was joined by his brother William in this venture. For nearly 50 years, George served Glen Ullin and the surrounding communities by drilling water wells and installing and repairing water systems for homes and livestock. On October 2, 1954, George married Dorinda Fuchs in Glen Ullin. The couple was blessed with three children, Douglas, Georgetta and Carleen. Aside from long hours at his business, George was also invested in many community organizations, including serving as a lifetime member of the Lawrence Higbee American Legion Post #239 of Glen Ullin, VFW, Glen Ullin Lions Club, Glen Ullin Senior Citizens, and American Legion and Youth baseball programs. He was also proud to be an honorary member of the 25th Infantry Division of the United States Army. George served on the Board of Directors for Marion Manor Health Care Center for more than 40 years, as well as Secretary/Treasurer and honorary member of the North Dakota Water Well Driller Association for many years. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church of Glen Ullin, actively serving in leadership positions and teaching Sunday school. George was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. He also enjoyed bowling and sponsored his own bowling team. He spent countless hours researching and documenting the Opp family ancestral history. George was loved by all and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community.
