A funeral service for Gerald “Jerry” Schopp, 78, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 a. m. , Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with Pastor Tim Johnson officiating. Military Rites will be presented by the Dickinson Honor Guard. Inurnment will take place at 3:00 p. m. CST, Wednesday in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Jerry passed away Monday, November 24, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson. Gerald Duane Schopp was born March 21, 1936 in Lehr, North Dakota, the son of Emil and Emellia (Bellan) Schopp. He grew up and attended school in Bismarck, graduating from Bismarck High School. Jerry attended Bismarck Junior College before transferring to the University of North Dakota. He later received his degree in Business Administration from Dickinson State University. On January 16, 1959, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army. After he was honorably discharged on December 19, 1960, Jerry returned to Dickinson and it was during this time that he met Marlene Meschke. Jerry and Marlene were united in marriage on March 10, 1963. The couple made their home in Dickinson and was where they raised their three daughters: Kim, Karla and Bobbie. In 1962, Jerry began working as an insurance adjuster and it was a passion he worked at for the rest of his life. Jerry and Marlene also owned and operated the Sims Café in downtown Dickinson for 13 years before managing the Ivanhoe Inn for another 10 years. Jerry was a member of the Jaycees, Roughrider Commission serving as President for five years, Elks Lodge serving as Past Exalted Ruler, Eagles Club serving as Past President, and was a member of the Shriners and Masons for over 53 years. He enjoyed being around his family and teaching his girls to shoot rifles and fish. Jerry is survived by his wife, Marlene of Dickinson; three daughters, Kim (Mark) Banick of Salem, OR, Karla (Scott) Scholl of Horace, ND, and Bobbie (Dana) Martin of Elk Grove, CA; eight grandchildren, Stephanie, Katie, Alea, Madison, Hali, Miles, Jack and Taylor; one great-grandson, Noah; a brother, Ellrie Von Schopp of CA; and a sister, Sharon VanDerbloom of Chicago Heights, IL.
