Subscription Update Obituary

A funeral Mass for Gertrude Emter, 101, of Glen Ullin, will be held at 10:30 a.m. CDT, Friday, December 29, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin with Father Jeff Zwack celebrating.

Visitation for Gertrude will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. CDT, Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a rosary and vigil service taking place at 6:00 p.m. CDT.

Gertrude passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at Marian Manor in Glen Ullin.

Gertie was born on April 7, 1916, the oldest daughter of Adam and Melchina (Hoerner) Thomas.  She grew up on her parent’s farm and attended country school in the St. Joes – Heart Butte area.  Gertie married Math Emter on May 21, 1934.  To this union, Math and Gertie had five children, Elaine, Darlene, Richard, Carol and Dennis.  They farmed south of Glen Ullin until 1969 when they moved into town.  Shortly after, she began employment as a CNA for Marian Manor Healthcare Center in 1969, until her retirement in 1994.  She continued to live in Glen Ullin.  Gertie enjoyed gardening, listening to old time music, and spending time cooking for her family and friends. Her well-known specialties were sugar kuchen, plachinda and red-eye.  She also cooked and baked for many people for special events.  She will always be remembered for her great sense of humor.  Gertie was a faithful member of St. Joe’s Catholic Church and later Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Her faith was very important to her.

Gertie is survived by her sons, Richard (Rita) Emter and Dennis (Karen) Emter; daughters, Elaine Perkins and Darlene Dvorak; sister, Helen Bechthold; 17 grandchildren, Sandy Hegel, Sherry Arantz, Duane (Karen) Schmidt, Devon Fahrni, Dean (Carleen) Dvorak, Renee (James) Erickson, Shelley (Jeff) Schmidt, Dale (Kristin) Dvorak, Nancy (Sheldon) Galster, Darren Dvorak, Kim (Greg) Nelson, Jan Emter, Brian (Connie) Emter, Steven (Sandra) Emter, Randy (Kelly) Bahr, Tammy (Doug) Nelson, Dawn Schantz; one step-grandchild, Tyra (Brian) Wanner; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren and one on the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Math (1993); daughter, Carol Deschamp; brothers, John, Marcus, Nick and Joe Thomas; sisters, Eva Huck, Clementine Lawrence, Eleanor Stockert, and infant sister, Irene; sons-in-law, Ted Schmidt, Bud Perkins, David Dvorak; step-grandchild, Uriah Krebs.
