Gilbert Theodore Knopp was born March 10, 1930 in Richardton, ND to Daniel and Mary (Schroeder) Knopp. He married Gertrude Duckwitz, the love of his life on June 14, 1952. Gilbert was baptized and was a member of St. Johns in Hebron. In the 1950’s, Gilbert was a lineman for the Farmers Valley Telephone Company. In 1958, they bought the farm and started Knopp Dairy which they managed for 30 years. They sold the dairy cows and started a beef herd with Hereford and Shorthorn cows. Gilbert attended AI school in 1971, and used the training to breed crossbred cows to Simmental. He bred Simmental until he had developed a herd of pure black Simmental cows. In 1998, he sold the entire herd to a young couple from Oakes, ND. In 1970, Gilbert was elected to the Hebron Creamery Board and served for 18 years. In 1975, he became a charter member of the Mercer County Ag Improvement Association and served two three-year terms. In 1960, they adopted a son, Douglas whom they enjoyed raising and in 1962 adopted their daughter Kathy, who was two months old. She was their Christmas gift that year. The Knopp family enjoyed farming, dairying and ranching, and in 1985 won the Mercer County Soil Conservation Award. Gilbert enjoyed yard work, tending to his flowers, puzzles, and traveling.
