Gordon D. Carlson

September 26, 1950 — March 26, 2025

Bismarck

Gordon D. Carlson, age 74, of Bismarck, passed away peacefully at home on March 26, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife and daughters. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Grace and the compassionate team at Red River Valley Hospice for their exceptional care during Gordy’s final days.

A memorial service to celebrate Gordy’s life will be held on Monday, March 31, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Bismarck Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior to the service for visitation.

Gordy was born on September 26, 1950, in Mandan, ND, and spent his childhood years between Shields, ND, and Intake, MT. He graduated from Baker High School in Baker, MT, in 1968. Throughout his life, Gordy found fulfillment in his work in the oilfield, a career that spanned over 50 years. His dedication and thirst for knowledge helped him excel in the industry, always striving for more.

In June of 1991, Gordy married Peggy Ehrmantrout after a three-year relationship, and together they built a life full of love and adventure. They made their home in Bowman, ND, until their retirement on September 17, 2017, when they relocated to Bismarck to be closer to their grandchildren. Even after retiring, Gordy remained active in the oilfield, offering his expertise as a consultant and pipeline inspector until September 2023.

Though Gordy may have had a tough exterior at times, his heart was pure gold. He was the rock of his family, a man who would drop everything to support his loved ones. His devotion to his wife, daughters, and grandchildren was immeasurable. As a grandfather, Gordy cherished his role as "Papa" to his five grandchildren, who adored him. They will forever miss his warm presence, the suckers he always had on hand, and the love he showered on them with every hug.

Gordy’s happiest moments were spent with handlebars in front of him and Peggy behind him. Together on their motorcycle, they enjoyed countless summers exploring the countryside. A true adventurer at heart, Gordy never needed a map—his instincts guided him to their destinations, wherever the road might take them.

Gordy also had a passion for cooking, often experimenting with new recipes for his smoker. He took joy in roasting his own coffee beans, keeping his vehicles spotless, and honing his woodworking skills. He created many beautiful, handmade keepsakes for his family, treasures that will be cherished for years to come. With a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous smile, Gordy loved sharing his latest joke with friends and family, brightening everyone’s day with his sense of humor.

Gordy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Grady Carlson.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 35 years, Peggy; daughters, Krista (Dusty) Oelke and Lacey (Scott) Satnan; grandchildren, Grady, Beckham, and Bridger Oelke, and Rylin and Bodee Satnan; his sister, Pam (Dennis) Freier; brothers- in-law, Randy and Jim Ehrmantrout; mother-in-law, Ann Ehrmantrout; as well as many other family members and friends who were fortunate to know him.

Gordy’s legacy of love, laughter, and devotion will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
