Gordon Ficek was born on August 16, 1943, in Dickinson, the oldest of six children to Ludwig and Emma (Privratsky) Ficek. He grew up on the family farm near Dickinson, where he learned how to help his father with farming. At the age of sixteen, Gordon went to work at the Leigh Briquestting Plant in Dickinson. After an accident caused him to lose two fingers, he went to Fargo to attend automobile repair school and began working at a local service station.

Gordon moved back to Dickinson, where he took on various jobs, including Sax Motors and hauling freight and oil for Koppinger Oil and Century Mercury, until opening his own transmission shop. He later worked for Brentag, hauling chemicals, until his retirement.

Gordon married Roberta Volesky on June 20, 1967, in New Hradec. The couple was blessed with their two children, Lynn and Steve.

Gordon enjoyed playing cards, fishing, camping, and hiking in the Bighorn Mountains during trips they took every summer. He once hiked with two of his friends to search for a plane that crashed in 1943 at Cloud Peak Wilderness area in Wyoming. Gordon's family and faith in God were the most important aspects of his life. He loved watching his children and grandchild participate in all their different activities. Gordon was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Hradec, a Knight of Columbus, and a Catholic workman.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bobbie of Dickinson; daughter, Lynn (Terry) Kubas of Dickinson; son, Steve (Karen) Ficek of Elkhorn, NE; grandchildren, Carly (Jake) Porter, Christopher Kubas, Lexi Kloewer, and Alaina Kloewer; great-grandson, Ty Porter; brothers, Dennis Ficek of Dickinson, Gary Ficek of Fargo, Dale Ficek of Dickinson; mother-in-law, Tillie Volesky; brothers-in-law, Wilfred (Kathy) Volesky, Kevin (Brenda) Volesky, Ken (Bobbie) Volesky, Karla (Russ) Schank, Keith (Tami Carter) Volesky; sister-in-law, Dawn Volesky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
