Grace Luella (Nodland) Zastoupil was born December 14, 1925, the daughter of Gonvald C. and Louise Nodland, in Dunn County, North Dakota. She attended elementary school in Dunn County and graduated from Dunn Center High School. She played basketball and was valedictorian of her class. She received a scholarship offer from Jamestown College, but briefly attended Dickinson State Teachers College instead. She married Benjamin F. Zastoupil on January 1, 1947 on her parent’s farm in Dunn County. They moved to Dickinson that same year and they lived there most of their lives thereafter. The last six years Grace resided in Fargo. For 18 years Grace worked in the physical therapy department at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, retiring in 1986 as department head of restorative therapy. Prior to this, she was a school teacher for three years at Eagle Nest School, Dunn County. She also worked as a store clerk at Woolworth in Dickinson. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and was a member of Sons of Norway. Annual Nodland family reunions were a special treat to her. She was active in church activities and served as an auxiliary volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital and as a member of the St. Luke’s Home Service League. She was a lifelong supporter of the college in Dickinson and was proud of the fact that all her children graduated from Dickinson State. Family was important to Grace, and she enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren. She and Ben also took pleasure in sightseeing, visiting the Black Hills, the Rocky Mountains, Oregon, California, Missouri, Virginia, and Washington, D. C. , among other places. Twice they traveled to Germany and once to the Czech Republic. They also visited Alaska for their 50th anniversary. But Grace was always proud of her North Dakota heritage and of fellow North Dakotans, especially Lawrence Welk, whose Saturday evening television program was a must-see for her for many years. Grace was a long-time member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson. She taught Bible School, participated in Altar Guild and Women of ELCA, and helped make lefse for holidays. She was also a member of the Endeavor Rebekah Lodge for 35 years. She held local and state offices, and served as State Assembly President in 1990-1991. She received the lodge’s Degree of Chivalry in April 1993 at Minnedosa, Manitoba, Canada. Grace is survived by her four children, Bonita (Herbert) Schmidt, Fargo; Timothy (Denise) Zastoupil, Maple Grove, Minn. ; Lynn (Margot Lueck-) Zastoupil, Memphis, Tenn. ; Rockford (Sharon) Zastoupil, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Theodore (Shelly) Schmidt, Gilroy, Calif. ; Clint (Stephanie) Schmidt, Grand Forks; Nicole (Joe) Epple, Shakopee, Minn. ; Peter Zastoupil, Memphis, Tenn. ; Michael (Calli) Zastoupil, Cheonan City, South Korea; and Bryan Zastoupil, Bismarck; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Christian, and Lucas Schmidt, Gilroy, Calif. ; two sisters, Florence (Gordon) Kucera, Bismarck and Rose Marie Nickel, Dickinson; one brother, George (Kayleen) Nodland, Dickinson; and many nephews and nieces.
