Guy Jaeger

A Funeral Mass for Guy Jaeger, 58, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Todd Kreitinger celebrating.  Burial will take place in St. Edward’s Cemetery near Fayette, ND.


Visitation for Guy will be 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a rosary and vigil service being held at 6:00 p.m.


Guy Jaeger passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at his home in Dickinson after a forty-six year battle with Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.


Guy Martin Jaeger was born December 17, 1958, in Dickinson, the son of Anton (Tony) and Frances (Miller) Jaeger.  He grew up on the family farm in the Fayette community west of Manning, where he cultivated an interest in mechanics and vehicles.  First it was his handmade go-cart, then motorcycles on which he spent much of his free time climbing clay buttes and riding the dirt roads and pastures with his neighborhood friends, and finally his main interest sports cars.  Guy attended school in Killdeer and graduated with the Killdeer High School class of 1977.


After high school Guy began working with a seismograph crew doing work throughout western ND.  He eventually followed the crew to the Houston, TX area, traveling there with friends and his first beloved Trans Am, a silver 1978 model with red interior.  Upon returning to Dickinson, Guy worked for the construction crew building the Little Knife gas processing plant west of Killdeer and eventually became a field technician working primarily at the tank batteries near the gas plant.  He continued working there until his health deteriorated in the late 1980s.


Though the years Guy overcame numerous surgeries and procedures under the excellent care of his local physician Dr. Mark Hinrichs, including two kidney transplants (the first one from his younger brother), dialysis, and beating cancer.  His second transplant in 1992 remained functional for a remarkable twenty-five years, over double the time length of average functionality.  After successfully fighting each battle through the years, Guy’s parents and others often would say that he was tough.  But no one it seems can be tough forever.


There is little doubt that Guy’s greatest passion and encyclopedic knowledge was regarding American muscle cars from the 60s and 70s, and especially the Trans Am, of which he owned many.  In his later years he began collecting his favorites that he missed buying when he was younger.  Upon returning home from his many hospitalizations, Guy would often head to his cars and remark how good it was to sit in a Trans Am again and hear the motor run.


Guy was very mechanically adept, performing his own vehicle modifications from installing Thrush mufflers and air shocks on his first car, a black Chevy Chevelle, to restoring a Tenth Anniversary edition Trans Am decades later.  When his health permitted he could usually be found working on cars or just tinkering in his shop.  Guy also enjoyed tracking the success of the Killdeer school sports teams, studying car magazines, riding along out to the farm to see the cattle and crops, and visiting with family and friends usually, of course, about cars.   Guy will be deeply missed, but he now is free of pain in God’s care.


Guy is survived by his mother Frances, who was his primary caregiver, a sister Mary Kay (Jan Erik) Jaeger, two brothers Gary (Margie) Jaeger, and Glen Jaeger, niece Heather Jaeger, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.


He is preceded in death by his grandparents and father Tony Jaeger.  In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial gift to the American Diabetes Association.
