Harlan passed away December 15, 2017 at CHI St. Alexius, Dickinson.
Harlan Clifton Larsen was born June 28, 1924 in Dickinson, the son of Holger and Clara (Lahren) Larsen. Growing up he attended Roosevelt Elementary and Dickinson Central High School, graduating with the class of 1942. While attending Dickinson State Teachers College, he was drafted into the US Army. During his service Harlan was selected into the engineering program and then special selection into medical school where he began his career in the medical field. After serving through WWII, he was honorably discharged. Harlan finished his education in Little Rock at the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1948. Harlan moved to St. Paul, MN to serve his internship and during this time he met Betty Lou Moreen. They were married on October 22, 1949 in Salina, KS. Harlan and Betty moved to Dickinson where he began his practice. They were blessed with five children. During the Korean Conflict, he was called to duty and served until he was discharged in 1952. Harlan proudly served the Dickinson and surrounding communities as a Physician for almost 50 years.
Harlan was always ready for a new adventure like tackling the computer or learning to ski in his 50s. When Harlan made up his mind to try something, he was all in. He loved music (trumpet), painting, flying (private pilot’s license), wine making, grilling, skiing, tennis, bird watching, and hunting. The one constant throughout Harlan’s life was his love of golf. From his early days to his later years Harlan truly enjoyed being out on the golf course. Harlan was active in his community and his profession, serving as a member of Elks, Shriners, Masons, North Dakota Medical Association, Dickinson State College Alumni Association, North Dakota Academy of Family Practice, Board of Directors of Blue Shield of ND (Chairman), North Dakota OB-Gyn Society (Pres.), Southwestern District Medical Society (Pres.), St. Joseph’s Hospital Chief of Staff, and Dickinson Civic Music Association. Harlan loved visiting with family and friends. He always had a story or a joke ready to share. He leaves our community having touched many lives. Harlan will be remembered and greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty of Dickinson; daughters Anne Kaldun of Inver Grove Heights, MN; Karin (Timothy) Carlson of Yakima, WA; Patricia (Robert) Johnson of Randolph, NJ; Martha (Paul) Rustad of Wayzata, MN; son, Eric Larsen of Minneapolis, MN; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister June Noyes of Billings, MT.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Holger and Clara Larsen; son-in-law, Gary Kaldun; and beloved dogs, Sam and Andy.
