Harriet Weir, 94, Dickinson, died Friday, August 12, 2005, in Dickinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a. m. , Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Jeff Zwack celebrating. Interment will be in St. Patrick?s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be 12 noon to 9 p. m. , Monday, August 15, 2005, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with a rosary and vigil at 7 p. m. Harriet Vivian Rother was an only child, born May 26, 1911, in Perth, ND to Fred Rother and Anna (McLean) Rother. She attended elementary and secondary school in Perth and Devils Lake. At the age of 16, she enrolled at UND to complete a Bachelors Degree in Classical Language in 1931. After teaching in Rugby for a few years, she went on to get a Master?s Degree from Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California. Harriet taught at a junior college a few years in California then she went on to teach in Illinois until she came to Dickinson in 1938. She taught English and drama at Dickinson State College from 1938 to 1941. In 1942, Harriet married Paul Weir, a local dentist. They were married in her family home in Sacramento, Calif. They returned to Dickinson to live and raise their family and became active members of the community. Harriet was a founding member of P. E. O. , member of the Dickinson School Board, and member of the Dickinson Public Library Board in the 1960?s. She was also a member of Monday Club and Eastern Star, and a member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church until the later years, when she joined Queen of Peace Parish. Harriet enjoyed reading, swimming, playing bridge, attending social gatherings with friends and family, and most of all, she loved to travel. She is survived by her five children: Robert (Julianne) Weir, Madison, WI, Katherine (Peter) Bentley, Portland, OR, Joan Allen, Dickinson, John (Deb) Weir, Dickinson, and Margie Hoff, Phoenix AZ and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by, her father, mother, and husband.
