Harry Turbiville

Funeral Services for Harry “Jim” Turbiville, 87, of Bowman formerly of Camp Crook, SD will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Camp Crook Rec Center in Camp Crook, SD. Pastor Chuck Swanson will be officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Camp Crook with Military Honors. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 26, 2012 at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. and continue until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral service. Jim passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Southwest Health Care Facility in Bowman, ND. Harry James was born March 22, 1925, the son of Albert and Susan Adeline (Wirt) Turbiville in Harding County, Camp Crook, SD. He attended the Slick Creek Country School through the 8th grade. He rode his pony from the time he was old enough to ride and his Dad made a rope ladder for Harry so he could get on his pony. He was known to stay in a sheep wagon to herd sheep whenever they were out to pasture. Harry entered the Army on September 24, 1943 at Fort Leavenworth, KS and served with the 321 Engineer Combat Battalion in the South Pacific and the 282 Brigade of the 96th Infantry Division. He was very proud to fight for his country. On February 9, 1946, Harry was honorably discharged. On October 31, 1949, Harry and Elsie Stuart were united in marriage in Ekalaka, MT. To this union, Walter, James, Mary and Larry were born. Harry and Elsie ranched northwest of Camp Crook, SD, at the foothills of the Long Pines until May 1961, at which time they moved to a ranch south of Marmarth, ND. Here, Harry leveled ground for alfalfa at the Bucholz place and irrigated out of a dam. There was good hay ground here and they raised a lot of hay and grain to feed their livestock. The family worked hard together to raise and care for sheep, cattle, chickens, geese, turkeys and horses. In 1987, Harry and Elsie turned the farm over and worked on the Painter and Brown ranches before moving to Beulah in 1992. They lived there until 2001 when they retired to Bowman. Harry and Elsie were blessed to celebrate 62 years together. Harry was a member of both the Baptist and Bible Church. He served on the Camp Crook school board for 11 years. Harry is survived by his wife, Elsie; sons, James (Sheryl) Turbiville of Rhame, ND, Larry Turbiville of Camp Crook, SD, Walter Holden (Beverly) Turbiville of Dickinson, ND; daughter, Mary Kraft of Fargo, ND; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ida Berreth of Kalispell, MT, Mary Lea (Stanley) Negaard of Rock Valley, IA; and sisters-in-law, Greta Turbiville of Buffalo, SD. He is preceded in death by both parents; granddaughter, Angel Darlene; brothers, Albert, Bill, Gene and Dewey; sisters, Edith Mae, Adeline and Vera; and great-grandson, Calvin Stuart Stecke.
