A funeral service for Herbert H. Bautz, 87, of New England will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 25, 2017 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in New England with Pastor Cal Oraw officiating.


Herbert passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.


Herbert Henry was born January 13, 1930, in New England, the oldest living child of Henry and Tillie (Sparlund) Bautz. Herbert was raised on the family farm in Dovre Township, Slope County. He attended grade school in Dovre Township and several years of High School in New England before enlisting in the US Army on December 2, 1948. Herbert spent most of his service in Germany as a trailer-truck driver, hauling disabled tanks and other equipment. After his honorable discharge on June 20, 1952, Herbert returned to the family farm. On December 2, 1956 Herbert was united in marriage to Mavis Mae Kurle in Eureka, South Dakota. Together they raised three sons. Besides being a farmer, Herbert also was a part-time employee for Slope County, building and maintaining roads. He was an officer of Dovre Township until the township was dissolved. Herbert was an avid airplane enthusiast, having earned his private pilot’s license at a young age and his commercial license later. He enjoyed bowling and golfing, having a perfect game in bowling and a hole in one in golf.


Herbert is survived by his wife, Mavis of New England; sons, Cameron Keith Bautz of South Heart, David Lee Bautz of New England, Kelly Wayne (Cheri) Bautz of New England; grandson, Jessie Lee Bautz of New England; brothers, Dale (Alice) Bautz of Great Falls, MT, Juel (Wynette) Bautz of Alexandria, MN; sisters, Carol Schulz of Miller, SD, Elaine Schulz of Dickinson, Lois (Arnold) Owen of Omaha, NE, Mary Lunn Brandvold of Stockett, MT; sister-in-law, Arlene Kurle of Eureka, SD; and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; brother, Lyle Bautz; brothers-in-law, Alfred Schulz, Michael Brandvold, Larry Kurle; sister-in-law, Marjie Bautz; and two nephews.
