He grew up on the family farm near Halliday and attended local country school. He later worked on the farm for a few years before joining the United States Army. While in the Army, Herbert was stationed in Hawaii from 1945-1946. After being honorably discharged, he moved back to Halliday where he met the love of his life, Marles (Nodland). The couple married on June 1, 1952 at Vang Lutheran Church. They made their home on the family farm near Halliday. In 1987 they moved into Halliday, but Herbert continued to farm until 1995. In 2005, they moved to Bismarck, where he devoted his time caring for Marles at the nursing home. Herbert was always kind, and loved meeting new people. No person was considered a stranger whenever he was around. He was well known for his mischievousness and quick wit. Herbert had a very strong faith in the Lord. He was a member of the Gideons and the Senior Citizens Center. He served on the Halliday Park Board, and the Halliday Elevator Association. Two proud memories for Herbert were participating in the WWII Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2007 to see the WWII Memorial and being chosen as an Honorary Norwegian at the Nodland family reunion.
