Herman passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck. Herman J. Ehlis was born May 27, 1942 in Dickinson, the son of John H. and Pauline (Hecker) Ehlis. He grew up on the family farmstead northeast of Dickinson and attended country school nearby. After his schooling, Herman continued to help his family on the farm as well as working for Sax Motor Company and the Dickinson Experiment Center for a few years. While working on the farm, Herman raised both cattle and grain crops. It was during this time that he met Carlotta Lawrence. The two were married on October 25, 1978 in Dickinson. Together, the couple made their home on the family farm and raised their son, Nathan. Family and the farm were very important to Herman and he took great pride in each. One of his proudest moments was watching his son graduate from college. Herman enjoyed riding motorcycle and playing guitar in his younger days and in later years spending time on ATV’s and his Ranger side by side. He loved to spend time tinkering with various projects and rarely found one he couldn’t finish or fix. Herman was fond of the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, and trapping. Herman truly loved animals and always had dogs and cats around the farm. At one time he had a pet fox and deer in addition to raising his cattle. Herman is survived by his wife, Carlotta; son, Nathan of Dickinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pauline Ehlis.
