Hubert & Viola Abrams

A Funeral Service for Hubert and Viola Abrams, Billings, formerly of Baker, will be 1:00 p. m. , Saturday, November 19th at Stevenson Funeral Home, Baker, MT with Pastor Wayne Hathaway officiating. Hubert passed away May 30, 2009. Vi passed away, Monday, October 17, 2016 in Billings, MT. Hubert and Viola Abrams have been reunited in heaven. Hubert was born May 8, 1925, the son of Charles and Olive Abrams in Carlyle, MT. He grew up on the farm at Carlyle with his brother and sister, graduated from Ollie High School and later entered the United States Navy during World War II and served honorably. Vi was born March 25, 1928 the daughter of Charles and Dora Hout of Miles City, MT. She grew up on a ranch south of Miles City, along the Tongue River, with her sister and 4 brothers. Upon graduation from high school, she worked as a telephone operator for AT&T and then accepted a teaching position at the Slater school near Carlyle, MT. It was here that Hubert and Vi met, fell in love and were married in November of 1947. They remained on the Abrams family farm and raised 4 children. Mom worked alongside Dad on the farm as she learned how to drive tractors and other large equipment. Mom was a hard worker and didn’t let little things like getting run over by a tractor get her down. She was up and going to the Crazy Days sales the next day as Mom couldn’t resist a bargain! Vi developed a quilt pattern called “Vi’s barbed wire” which was to become her trademark. She was a very generous person and would donate many of her quilts to charities and other good causes, hundreds of which are now enjoyed by extended family, friends, and acquaintances across the country. Farming and ranching was dad’s passion, and there was always something that needed to be done. Hubert represented the people of Eastern Montana as a Representative and Senator until he was forced to retire due to CLL. He served on various school, agriculture and bank boards. Hubert was a true gentleman and was well respected and loved by everyone whose life he touched. He enjoyed auction sales, and could always be counted on for good conversation over coffee. Because of his health, Hubert and Vi moved to Billings to retire but retirement wasn’t meant for dad. He spent the next 15 years as a handyman/manager of apartments. Throughout all of their adventures together, their focus was always on their family. Vi and Hugh encouraged their children to work hard, step out to see the world and to set their goals high. Their trips with Friendship Force all over the world were great examples. Mom’s dedication to her family was very evident in her never-ending support of her children and of our father with his lengthy battle with health problems. Their children will always be grateful to both of them for their hard work and unselfish values. Hubert and Vi are survived by 4 children, Annette Efta, Patricia Emerson, Scott Abrams, all of Billings, and Alan Abrams of Littleton, CO; 11 grandchildren, Jill Efta (Matt) Brietbach, Aaron and Meghan Efta, Amanda and Angela Abrams, Lisa (Abrams) Morgan (John), and Alex Abrams; four great-grandchildren, Morghann, Adyson, Zachary and Nick; four step-granddaughters, Megan (Bryan Lindstrom), Erin (Ty Werges), Brigid and Shae Duffy.
