Beginning at age 15, he worked at various jobs, ranch hand, sheep herder, grain farmer, mink farmer, carpenter and lumber jack. In 1963, he went to work on the Wahl Ranch at Jefferson, Colorado where he worked until he retired in 1999. In 2000, he and Catherine bought a place at Canyon Creek, Montana where they lived until health issues in 2002 required they move closer to their daughter in North Dakota.
