Mass of Christian Burial for Ida Eva Schaeffer, 96, of Dickinson will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 17, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dickinson, ND, with Rev. Todd Kreitinger celebrating. Interment will be at a later date at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Dickinson.
Visitation for Ida will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 16 at Stevenson Funeral Home, with a Rosary and Vigil service taking place at 6:00 p.m.
Ida passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.
Ida was born September 21, 1920 in the Gladstone community to Liberatus and Celestina (Heck) Schaeffer. The Schaeffer family then moved to a farm near Hirshville, followed by a move to a farm NE of Amidon, in Slope County. Ida attended schools in Peaceful Valley Township, St. Mary’s New England, and achieved a High School GED.
During WWII, Ida was employed by Kaiser Corporation as a welder in the Portland, Oregon Shipyards, where they built the Liberty Troop Transport ships in support of the war effort. Upon her return to Slope County, she worked at the Schaeffer home and farm. Ida served as a 4-H Club Leader, was an active member of the Homemaker’s Club, and the Ladies Guild at St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Amidon. She became a Lifetime Member of the Court of St. Catherine’s Catholic Daughters Society.
In 1954, the family sold their farm and moved to Dickinson, where Ida was trained by Sr. Adelaide and Dr. Raasch as an X-ray Technician at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She then worked there for 31 years, eventually becoming Head Technologist, and an active member of the American Society of Radiology Technologists. She retired from St. Joseph’s Hospital in January, 1985.
Ida had a passion for travel, and visited family and historic sites in Argentina, Alaska, Hawaii, and six European countries. During her retirement years, Ida performed innumerable Acts of Kindness and Works of Mercy for countless friends, family, and neighbors. In February, 2009, Ida moved to Evergreen ALH, where she entertained staff and residents with her boisterous tales and historic tidbits. Ida entered St. Benedict’s Health Center on April 11, 2012. There, she continued to enjoy the company of family and friends until her death.
Ida is survived by 43 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Nick, Joe, Phil, infant brother, John; four sisters, Bertha Obrigewitch, Monica Olds, Rose Rotering, Mary Ann Rau and their spouses; and three nephews.
