Irene passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson.
Irene was born June 18, 1936 in Stark County, the second oldest of ten children born to Henry and Mary (Kubas) Ficek. She was raised and educated in New Hradec and Dickinson. Irene married Ludwig (Louie) Hondl in 1953. To this union, four children, Linda, David, Gary, Jeffrey, were born. Louie passed away in 1967. Irene later married Joseph Kostenko and their daughter Lynette was welcomed to the family. While on the farm southwest of Dickinson, Irene spent her days milking cows, raising poultry, growing a large garden and she loved flowers. She enjoyed canning and making homemade noodles. In 1998, Irene moved to Dickinson and lived a quiet peaceful life, reading, listening to music and watching tv. It was important to her to spend an hour in prayer every day. She especially loved her family and enjoyed visits from them and her friends. Irene is very grateful to all those who cared for her through her tough days of fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis; especially the wonderful people at Park Ave Villa.
Irene is survived by her sons, David (Kathy) Hondl of Dickinson, Gary (Mary) Hondl of Auburn, WA, Jeffrey Hondl of Eldora, IA; daughters, Linda (Lee) Ness of Auburn, WA, Lynette (Charlie) Dunbar of Baldwin, ND; sisters, Alice (Ed) Binstock of Columbus, MT; brothers, Gilbert (Margie) Ficek of Billings, MT, Donald Ficek of Beaver Dam, WI, Raymond Ficek (Tina Rixen) of New England, Clarence (Linda) Ficek of Tampa, FL, Alvin (Shirley) Ficek of Rapid City, SD, Kenneth (Jayne) Ficek of Prescott, AZ; nine grandchildren, Mike (Karen) Ness, Allen (Laura) Hondl, Brooks Hondl, Nickolas Hondl, Stephanie Hondl, Jessica Hondl, Jessica Dunbar and Brandon Dunbar; five great-grandchildren, Alex, Max, Andrea, Deianira and Merrick; and two great-great grandchildren, Lianne and Zander.
