Jacob Opp

Jacob Edward Opp, age 87 of the Marian Manor in Glen Ullin and formerly of Redwood City, CA died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at the Marian Manor. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 AM CENTRAL TIME at Zion Lutheran Church in Glen Ullin with the Reverend Loren Strum Officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 3-8 pm at the Spangelo Funeral Home in Glen Ullin with a prayer service at 7:00 PM led by Reverend Doug Opp. Burial will be in the Glen Ullin Cemetery in Glen Ullin on Sunday at 2:00 PM Central Time with Military Rites by Lawrence Higbee Post #239 of the American Legion. Jacob E. Opp was born May 12, 1918 in Morton County the son of John K. and Margaret (Blatz) Opp. He was raised and educated in Glen Ullin. On July 20, 1938 he entered the US Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre and saw 17 major engagements from being in Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, to seeing the mushroom cloud over Japan after the bomb was dropped. He served in the Navy until 1959. Following discharge he worked for United Airlines for 21 years retiring in September of 1980. He married Karen Herting on November 21, 1964 and settled in Redwood City, CA. Due to declining health he returned to Glen Ullin in January of 2005 be near family. Jacob is survived by his son John, of Oregon, and a stepson Fred, in California. His brothers: George (Dorinda) Opp and William (June) Opp all of Glen Ullin, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and sister, his first wife Joephine, wife Karen in January of 2005, and one brother Carl.
