Funeral Mass for James J. Gerving, 87, of Glen Ullin, will be 10:00 a.m. CT, Friday, July 21, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Gary Benz celebrating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation for James will be an hour prior to the service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
James passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.
James John Gerving was born October 9, 1935 to Val and Clara Fern (Ladd) Gerving in Bismarck, North Dakota. Jim Graduated from Glen Ullin High School in 1953. He then went on to Capital Commercial College in Bismarck, where he met Marlene. After graduating he worked at MDU in Bismarck as a traveling auditor and accountant. He enlisted into the United State Air Force. He was honorably discharged. After the service he returned back to his family farm where he farmed and ranched alongside his Father Val and Brother Bennie. He married Marlene Holznagel on September 9, 1961. To this union they were blessed with their children, Tamara, Glenn, Dean and Allan. Together the couple took over his family farm and continued farming and ranching with his sons, Glenn and Dean, until his death. Jim served the Glen Ullin community for over sixty years by being a part of the Fire District, Lions Club, Job Development Committee, Credit Union, Booster Club, and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed, bowling, attending stock car races, dancing, roller skating, playing cards, and watching movies. Jim never missed an event for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. He will be deeply missed.
James is survived by his wife, Marlene of 61 years; children, Tamara (Greg) Sundby of Brooklyn Center, MN, Glenn (Lisa) Gerving of Glen Ullin, Dean (Tera) Gerving of Mandan, Allan (Shana) Gerving of Bismarck; grandchildren, Greg Jr (Bekah) Sundby, Moriah Sundby, Isabel Sundby, Theodore James “TJ” (Lilyana) Sundby, Jamie (Mat) Seiler, Alisha (Josh) Gerving, Kendra (Tresten) Gerving, Jordan Saylor, Faith Gerving, Hannah Gerving, Ashley Gerving, Ethan Gerving, Ryan Gerving, Owen Gerving; six great-grandchildren, Kayden, Camden and Hudson Saylor, Bristol Seiler and Stefan and Kassian Sundby.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Val and Fern Gerving; brother, Bennie Gerving; sisters, Ethel Riedinger and Alice Bauer.
