In 1945, he went into partnership with his brother Bill and moved north of Sentinel Butte. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and playing cards (wearing out many decks playing solitaire) and most holidays usually involved a game of pinochle. Jim could strike up a conversation with anyone. No one was a stranger for very long. Jim was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He served as a member of Lutheran Brotherhood and the church council, taught Sunday school, took part in and also taught Bible study. Jim also served on the board of education for both Sentinel Butte and Beach Schools.

Jim is survived by his wife, Janice of Sentinel Butte; daughters, Arlene (Gene) Schmeling of Beach; Jacki (Scott) Musgrave of Bingham, NE; sons, Doug (Judy) of Sentinel Butte, Kirk (Melissa) of Mandan; brother, Bill Johnson of Wibaux, MT; grandchildren, Marie (Nathan), Marcie (Austin), Rory (Emily), Cody, Patrick, Samantha, Justin, Chelsea, Wyatt, Zane; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
