Jim passed away Monday, February 24, 2024 at Marian Manor Health Center in Glen Ullin, North Dakota.
James Valentine was born in Glen Ullin on June 29, 1928, the son of Michael and Magedelena (Messer) Schaaf. Farming was his way of life, and he took great pride in his work.
On November 24, 1962, he married Marianne Hunke at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mandan. Together, they built a blessed life with two sons, Gregory and James.
In 1993, Jim and Marianne moved from the farm into town, where Jim became and active member in the community. He was President of the Lion’s Club, Life member of Elks, President of ND Crop Improvement Association and Archery Club. He also delivered Meals on Wheels to local seniors.
Faith played a central role in Jim’s life. He served on the Sacred Heart Catholic Church board, and even assisted with the concrete work for the old parish hall. He also was a Eucharistic Minister and enjoyed attending Mass at Lake Tschida.
Jim loved the outdoors and spent his free time fishing, hunting, playing cards, gardening, and feeding birds in his backyard. He and Marianne also opened their home to three exchange students over the years: Lucia from Brazil, and Margarita and Fernando from Bogotá.
In recognition of his dedication, Jim was proudly awarded a Rosary upon retiring from the Board of Regents after 35 years. He was also a member of the President’s Club at the University of Mary.
Above all, Jim cherished time with his family, especially watching his granddaughters' basketball games and rodeos.
Jim is survived by his wife Marianne; sons Gregory Schaaf of Mandan, James “Jimmy” (Jess) Schaaf of Glen Ullin; grandchildren, Jamie Schaaf, Isabella, Aeriel and Olivia; sister, Jeanine Simon of IA.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Magedelena Schaaf;; three brothers, Mathew, Michael Jr. and John; and sisters, Cecilia, Elizabeth, Ann, Agnes, Elinor, and infant sister, Orva.
In lieu of flowers, Jim’s family suggests donations be made to the Ben Hunke Music Scholarship at the University of Mary in Bismarck. Jim and Marianne established this scholarship in honor of Marianne’s late father.
