James Young

A private family service for James E. Young, 78, of Dickinson, will be held this week at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Dickinson.


James passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson.


James E Young was born May 23, 1934 in Kentucky. He grew up in the Kentucky/Ohio area where he graduated from high school. After school, James enlisted in the United States Air Force. After serving his term in the Air Force, James joined the United State Army and served there for over 20 years. While stationed in Germany, he met his wife Renate Sturmer and the two were married on February 12, 1959, in Heidelberg, Germany. To this union, four children were born: Maria, Donald, Frank, and Penny. Throughout James’ career in the Army, they traveled and were stationed in many different countries and bases. After his retirement, they moved to Dickinson, ND, and made their home there ever since. James was affectionately known for his ability and frequency of whistling. He enjoyed playing x-box games, especially combat ones. James was very proud of his service to our country. He was a proud member of the American Legion. Above all, James loved life and enjoyed being around people.


James is survived by three children; Maria Nichols, Penny Young, and Frank (Teresa) Young, all of Dickinson, ND; five grandchildren, Maranda (Brien) Gentry, Joshua Nichols, Devin Young, Christopher Young, and Donald Young, all of Dickinson, ND; nine great-grandchildren, Ashton, Brayton, Lillyaunna, Kambrie, Myla, Malachia, Zacharia, Gabrielle, and Isaic.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Renate; one son, Donald; and three grandchildren, Bryanna, Brandyn, and Lacey.
