‘Welldone, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Janice passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014 at her home in Dickinson. On March 17, 1942, Janice Elaine Buland was born in Fargo ND to Roy and Bertha Buland. At age 5, she and brother Michael moved with their mother to Southern CA. At age 7, she gave her heart to Jesus Christ at Community Bible School when a teacher explained the difference between knowing who Jesus is and having Him live in your heart. She attended school in Santa Ana, CA where she met and married her high school sweetheart James D. Davis in 1962. Together they made a home in Santa Ana, CA and had 2 beautiful children; Troy and Stephanie. In 1972 Janice married Gerald DeTarr. After raising her children, Jan attended California State University Fullerton and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, continuing on at UCLA where she earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work at the age of 50. Her pursuit of higher education was never about the prestige or the diploma, it was all about helping people. This passion was realized as God’s call on her life when she worked in a group home helping developmentally disabled adults. She then went into hospice work until her retirement in 2010, when she moved back to ND in order to “not miss out on” the growing up of her youngest grandson. During this time and until her death she was passionate about serving Jesus, her Lord and Savior. Some of her callings included Hunger and Homeless Ministries, Fare Trade, Missions Work, Sound/Music Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Prayer, Bible Studies; but her greatest calling was in teaching her children and grandchildren the importance of knowing Jesus! When we say “children” and “grandchildren” it encompassed so much more than biological family. A child was never just a child, a niece never just a niece, a friend was always more than a friend. These were her kids, her grandkids, her brothers and sisters. She will always be known as Grammy Jan, faithful friend, prayer warrior. She will be missed by all, and remembered in our hearts forever. Jan is now with the love of her life – Jesus Christ for all eternity, and her desire is that one day you will be too. Please prayerfully consider your relationship with Jesus Christ, knowing that “For bygrace you have been saved throughfaith, and that not of yourselves;it is the gift of God,9not of works, lest anyone should boast. ” Eph 2:8-9 Jesus – there is no greater love!Janice was preceded in death by her mother Bertha Ann (Fellbaum) Peters, dad Walter “Pete” Peters and her Biological father Roy Buland. She is survived by her children, Troy and Kelly Davis, California; Ron and Stephanie (Davis) Hodson, Dickinson, ND; Shawna McManus, California; brother, Michael Burns, California; nieces Celeste Edman and Heather McCaffery. Grandchildren: Kristiana Davis (17), Joseph Hodson (23), Joshua Hodson (22), Corban Hodson (6), Matthew McManus (16), Rebecca McManus (10), Jayden Sethman (5), Brooklyn Sethman (3).
