Jean Runge

A funeral service for Jean Runge of Bismarck, ND, formerly of Dickinson, will be 2:00 p. m. , Friday, December 26, 2014 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson. Burial will follow in Dickinson Cemetery. Visitation for Jean will be from 12:00 p. m. to 2:00 p. m. , Friday, December 26, 2014 at Stevenson Funeral Home. Jean passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014 at her home in Bismarck. Jean Runge was born February 5, 1925 in Fargo, ND, the daughter of W. D. and Anna Mahoney. Jean grew up and attended school in New England, ND, graduating Salutatorian from high school. She attended Dickinson State University for a teaching degree, and taught at rural schools in Slope County for three years. Jean met and married Ralph Runge on June 20, 1947 in New England, ND. To this union five children were born: Monty, Myron, Marlyn, Scott and Joyce. Together they worked on the Stuber Ranch near Bowman, and in October of 1947, they moved on the ranch near Medora where they raised their family. Ralph did all the ranching, while Jean was passionate about her horses. They raised commercial Angus cattle and registered Welsh ponies. Eventually, they sold their ranch and moved to Lewistown, MT, where they purchased a place near the mountains. After Ralph’s sudden death in 1988, Jean moved back to Dickinson. In 2008, she made her final home in Bismarck. Jean loved keeping in touch with friends, even worldwide. Her faith in the Lord was the foundation of her life. Jean was a professional horse trainer, and she enjoyed horse breeding; she was nationally and internationally acclaimed. Jean is survived by her sons, Monty Runge of WA, Myron (Karen) Runge of New Rockford, ND, Marlyn Runge of WA and Scott (Kelley) Runge of Bismarck, ND; one daughter, Joyce Chord of Oelrichs, SD; six grandchildren, Joel (Denise) Runge of Alexandria, MN, Bruce (Meredith) Runge of Alexandria, MN, Heidi (Brian) Johnson of San Diego, CA, Kevin (Ana) Runge of Cypress, TX, Kelly (Eddy) Ryes of Orange City, IA, Ryan Runge of Felton, CA and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ralph Runge.
