Jim Tom passed away in the Dahl Memorial Hospital Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at the age of 77. Jim Tom was born Nov. 10, 1935 in Camp Crook, South Dakota at Grandma Mae Padden’s house. He was the 4th child of Hazel Jane Croke and Thomas J. Padden II. He attended grade school at Rema School, Plainview School and Camp Crook Public School. Jim Tom graduated from Carter County High School in Ekalaka, Montana with the class of 1953. Jim Tom was drafted and served in the US Army in 1958 until 1960 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Then during the Berlin Crises, Jim Tom was recalled for a second time in 1961-62 stationed in Texas. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant in the capacity as a supply officer. After the military Jim Tom returned to the family Padden ranch that was homesteaded in 1885 and joined his older brother, Joby, in ranching. The joy of Jim Tom’s life was farming and catching catfish in the Little Missouri River. He was one of the long-time dedicated bachelors of Tie Creek and enjoyed his friends and brothers’ family immensely. He never spoke ill of anyone except the weatherman whom he claimed was never correct except for providing the current temperature and yesterday’s low. Jim Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Hazel; two sisters, JoAnne and Mary Jane; one brother and sister-in-law, Joby and Jeannie; and his niece, Libby Padden Smith. Jim Tom is survived by his brother, Willard John (Juanita), and two nephews, Tim (Katie) and Tom (Kelly) Tie Creek Cousins; and his many dear friends in Carter County, Montana and Harding County, South Dakota.
