Joan Multhaup

A Funeral Service for Joan Delores Multhaup, 82, of New England, will be held at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the First Congregational Church, UCC, in New England, ND with Pastor Janel Kolar officiating. Burial will follow at the New England Cemetery. Visitation for Joan will take place from 10:00 a. m. to 10:30 a. m. on Wednesday at the church. Joan passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson, ND of congestive heart failure. She was born Dec. 2, 1933 on the farm at DeSart, ND to Anna (Pulkrabek) and Roy Multhaup. Joan’s education began in a one room country school house known as the “Ott” school, or Enterprise No. 2, one mile west of the farm, where she skipped grade 5. Joan was Valedictorian of her class (1951) at New England Public High, and one of the first to go to the University of North Dakota, at Grand Forks, from New England, majoring in chemistry. She earned her Masters in chemistry at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. She taught Chemistry, Science and Math at high schools and colleges around the United States, including Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. Throughout her life, Joan was a lover of art and purchased over 40 original paintings over the years, from various artists, which she continued to treasure throughout her life. These, she has left to her six grateful nieces and nephews. Joan is remembered for being not only a huge Star Trek fan, but also a John Denver fan, before either became famous, thereby recognizing early-on the specialties of both. Joan is survived by one brother, Herbert Multhaup, New England. She is predeceased by her parents, and one brother, Ernest Multhaup, Arnold, CA.
