Joanne Elizabeth (Curran) Cleveland was born April 20, 1926 to William and Myrtle (Dargan) Curran in Fargo, ND. She attended Moorhead St. College in Moorhead, MN and received a degree in music. Her first job after graduation was in Ekalaka in 1948 where she was a music teacher at Carter Co. High School. She taught for 2 years then in October 1950, she married Patrick Cleveland of Ekalaka. They had four children: Bill, Anne, Mary, and Margaret. Joanne accompanied students for the music festival for 38 years. Joanne played the organ and sang for mass at St. Joan of Arc for many years. Sometimes for the morning mass, there would be just her and the priest and she would sing in Latin. She did this for many years until they did not have the morning mass anymore. After Pat passed away, Joanne moved to Billings and lived there for about 25 years. While in Billings, she enjoyed singing in the Mayflower Church choir, going to symphonies and going to garage sales. She loved buying used things and bringing them home and making them look like new again. Joanne moved back to Ekalaka in 2007 and lived in the manor. She loved her little ?house?. She loved to play the piano. When she lived in the manor, she would have an audience outside sitting on the benches or sitting on the steps to the manor. Some even just came on in, sat down, and enjoyed. She loved to putter in the flowerbeds and pull weeds. She hated weeds and everything in the yard needed to be trimmed before the job was done. Joanne passed away May 18th 2012 at Dahl Memorial Nursing Home. She was 86. Joanne is survived by her children, Bill(Amy)Cleveland of Nisland, SD. , Anne(Tim)Fix of Ekalaka, MT, Mary (Brian)Quade of Alamo, CA and Margaret(George) Kostelecky of Billings, MT; 8 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren.
