Joseph Frank “Joe” Blutt was born on September 28, 1910 to Jacob and Katherina (Boben) Blutt at Bearcreek, Montana. At a very young age, Joe and his family left rural Carbon County and moved to the Mill Iron Community where Joe and his family homesteaded. Joe grew up on the family farm and attended schools in Mill Iron and Baker where he graduated from high school. Joe met a young woman, Helen Irene Frye. The two were later married in Baker, MT on October 22, 1939. To this union five children were born; Josephine, Myrna, Kenneth, Dennis and Larry. After their marriage, Joe and Helen moved to California where Joe went to school, learning the electrical trade. After finishing school in California, Joe and Helen moved back to Ekalaka where they made their home and took over the Blutt homestead where he farmed until the mid 1950?s. Joe was a man of many talents; being an electrician, he owned and operated a garage and repair shop, he worked as the boiler man for the courthouse and hospital and later he and Helen bought the Locker in Ekalaka in 1951. Together they operated it for twenty-five years. They not only processed meat but also had a lunch counter where the kids hung out. They also raised mink for several years. Together in 1970, they started playing horseshoes as a competitive sport and the couple won many a tournament! As a young man, Joe taught himself how to play the accordion. His love for accordion music continued through the years, until just a few weeks ago. Besides playing his accordion, Joe enjoyed gardening, dancing and playing cards.
