Funeral Mass for Deacon Joe Kappel, 86, of Dickinson, ND will be 12 noon, Saturday, February 16, 2008, at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Dickinson the Most Reverend Paul A. Zipfell, D.D. celebrating and Father Austin Vetter, Preaching. Military Honors will be presented by the Dickinson Drill Team. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. CST on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the North Dakota Veteran?s Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2008, continuing 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, February 15, 2008 at Stevenson Funeral Home. Visitation will continue from 4 p.m. at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Joe passed away Monday, February 11, 2008 at his home in Dickinson. Deacon Joe Kappel was born January 3, 1922, at St. Joseph?s Hospital in Dickinson to Joseph Sr. and Mary Sigl Kappel. He grew up on the family farm and attended grade school in Gladstone. After high school graduation he moved to Washington state where he worked in a shipyard for several years before being drafted into the Army during World War II. After serving for three years, Joe returned to the family farm where he renewed his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Vi Feiler. The relationship matured to love and the two where married on April 10, 1947 at St. Thomas? Catholic Church in Gladstone, ND. After a year on the farm, the couple moved to Dickinson where they made their home and raised their family. It was during this time that Joe began his career as a barber which continued until the day of his passing. Joe enjoyed people and this was evident in the combination of his profession and outgoing personality. He was fond of cooking, playing his harmonica, and gardening in his yard. Joe loved serving the Lord and did so as a Deacon at St. Patrick?s Parish for over 23 years. He was a member of St. Anthony?s Club, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, a 60 year member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, and he was also a past president of the North Dakota Barber?s Association Joe is survived by three sons, Jeff (Arlene) Kappel, Dickinson, ND; Craig Kappel, Dickinson, ND; Jace (Jan) Huenemeier of Visalia, CA; three daughters, Brenda (Steve) Juhasz, Denver, CO; Pam (Ernie) Maglischo, Denver, CO; Mary Jo (Michael) Fontaine, Denver, CO; eight grandchildren, Wade (Tracie) Flemmer; Dawn Kappel; Melissa Kappel; Krista (Chris) O?Leary; Lindsay Juhasz; Joseph Fontaine; Alex Fontaine and Janell Huenemeier; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Flemmer and Logan Flemmer; three brothers, Bill Kappel of WA; Herb (Dorothy) Kappel of Fargo, ND; Richard (Lorraine) Kappel of Dickinson; a sister, Jean Haldeman of WA. He was preceded in death by his wife Vi, both parents, and seven siblings.
