Joe passed away, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at St. Benedicts Health Center in Dickinson. Joe G. Loh was born May 13, 1922 to Carl and Susanna (Seiler) Loh. He grew up on the Loh homestead four miles northwest of Lefor and attended grades one through eight in a country school near Lefor. When his parents moved to Dickinson in 1946, Joe found work at Queen City Packing. In 1946, his parents purchased a farm four miles north of Regent. Joe then worked for neighbor, Frank Gion, whose pretty daughter, Lorraine, soon caught his eye. Joe and Lorraine were married on June 28, 1948, at St. Michael?s Catholic Church in rural Regent. They lived in the Regent area from 1948 to 1955, moved to the Lefor area in 1955 and in 1956 they moved fourteen miles west of Manning to a ranch owned by Alwin Carus. In 1971, Joe purchased the ranch and continued to live there, raising cattle and farming until moving to St. Benedict?s Health Center in 2008. Joe had a life-long interest in cattle, horses, collecting horse bits and rodeo. In 1946, he was one of the original members of the Regent Saddle Club. Joe was a member of the North Dakota Stockmen?s Association for 54 years and the German Hungarian Club. Through the years, Joe was a member of the following Catholic churches: St. Henry?s in Regent, St. Elizabeth?s in Lefor, St. Edward?s in Fayette where he was a trustee until it closed in 1986, St. Peter?s in Grassy Butte and Queen of Peace in Dickinson. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads, and always had a keen eye for spotting them from the tractor while working in the fields or on horseback. Joe was a great story teller. From the pranks of his youth to the funny anecdotes of his many friends, he was even able to add the German accent or southern drawl to his stories. Joe was also the family barber, giving haircuts to his grandpa, his sons and his grandsons. Joe is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his three children, Diane Johannesen of Sundance, WY, Tim (Vickie) Loh, of Manning and Jeff Loh, of Dickinson; four grandchildren, Lorri (Kevin) Capistran, Loren (Bernadette) Loh, Carl (Jena) Johannesen, and Paul Johannesen; four great grandchildren, Maria Loh, John Loh, Gianna Loh and Ben Capistran; one brother, Don Loh, Regent; and one sister, Vera Gion, Renton WA. He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Margaret; and one sister Margaret Cone. The family prefers memorials be made to the Elks Camp Grassick.
