Funeral services for Joe K. Wanner, 66, of Gladstone, will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at St. John Lutheran Church in Dickinson with Pastor Lisa Lewton officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Dickinson Mausoleum.

Visitation for Joe will be from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a prayer service being held at 6:00 p.m.

Joe passed away July 13, 2023 at CHI St. Alexius in Dickinson.

Joseph K. Wanner was born September 12, 1956 to Clara (Schmidt) and Joseph Wanner. He grew up in the Gladstone area, graduating from Trinity High School. Following graduation he farmed and ranched in Gladstone and worked various jobs around the area including time at Dickinson Steele Builders and many years at SW District Health as the Emergency Preparedness and Response Coordinator. Joe married Renae Sandvick on October 21, 1977 at St. John Lutheran Church. To this union three children were born: Jeremy, Brandon, and Allison. The family continued to live on the farm. In 1977, Joe joined the Gladstone Fire Department where he served as Chief for 32 years.

Joe enjoyed farming, ranching, and cooking. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren as they were the light of his life. Joe was a member of the Homeless Coalition, The Eagles Club, Dickinson Knights of Columbus 6308, Lions Club, and Oddfellows along with various other local and state community organizations. In recognition of his efforts, Joe was awarded the Spirit of Excellence Award and the Governor’s Medallion.

In July of 2022, Joe was diagnosed with brain cancer.  He fought a hard battle until the very end.

Joe is survived by his wife Renae; children Jeremy (Cheryl) Wanner, Allison Wanner, and Brandon (Taylor) Wanner; grandchildren Ashlynn, Maci, Bryer, Sophie, and Kash; siblings Ken (Pam) Wanner, Rosie Huschka, Viola (Ken) Rech, Eleanor Praus, Patty (Art) Hensel, Shirley Endelicato, Jackie (Bob) Kinsel, and Millie (Craig Steve) Wagner; brother-in-law Roger Galland; mother-in-law Ruth Sandvick; many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Clara; father-in-law Ole Sandvick; sister Marge Galland; brothers-in-law Maynard Huschka, Tony Praus, and Mark Endelicato.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice.
