John J. Gulka, 88, Dickinson, died Sunday, September 5, 2004, at St. Benedict?s Health Center, Dickinson. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a. m. Saturday, September 11, 2004, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Dennis Schafer celebrating. Interment will be in St. Joseph?s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be 12:30 p. m. to 9 p. m. Friday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home. Special music will be provided by Chuck and Vince Kadrmas from 7:00 to 7:30 p. m. There will be a rosary at 7:30 p. m. led by St. Joseph?s Church K of C Council 6308, followed by a prayer service led by Fr. Dennis Schafer. John J. Gulka was born on the family farm southwest of New Hradec on July 21, 1916, to Sam and Lena (Anheluk) Gulka. He farmed with his dad and helped move houses. John met Marian Schmidt at Adamski?s Store in New Hradec. They married on October 11, 1944, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in New Hradec, ND. They lived on the family farm until November of 1973, when they moved to Dickinson. Marian died June 7, 2003. John was a life member of the St. Joseph?s Church K of C Council and was a member of the Eagles Club. He loved to listen to the polkas, waltzes and watch his great grandchildren pick peas in the garden. John enjoyed tinkering in his shop but his heart and soul always returned to the farm and his love for his cattle. John left behind many words of wisdom for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They are now joined together and our memories of them will remain in our hearts forever. John is survived by: one son, Arnie (Carol) Gulka, Valley City; two daughters, Patricia (Al) Karsky, Minot and Charlotte (Bernard) Ficek, Dickinson; eight grandchildren, Rob (Dawn) Karsky, Pam (Mike) Thomason, Jennifer (Eric) Mehrer, Brian (Laura) Ficek, Tammy (Russ) Fisher, Danielle Ficek, Amanda Gulka and Amy Gulka; 10 great grandchildren, Jonathan and Kristen Thomason, Joseph and Tyler Mehrer, Zachary Karsky, Amanda, Andrew and Ashley Ficek, Allyssa and Hannah Fischer; two sisters, Anna Basaraba, Belfield and Betty (Tony) Ficek, Bismarck; three brothers, Jim and Nick Gulka, both of Dickinson and Steven Gulka, Lakewood, Colo. He was preceded in death by: his wife, parents, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law, many beloved pets and many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: St. Benedicts?
