John Karch, Jr. was born on November 1, 1911 to John Sr. and Elizabeth (Hirsch) Karch at the family farm six miles west of Baker, MT. Also born to this union were his brother Charley and sisters Elizabeth, Bertha, Ida and Viola. Uncle John as he was known by many attended the Tonquin Country School through the eight grade. As these were the depression years, he farmed with his father and made several trips to Wisconsin to work with Robert Rose; who would later become his father-in-law. They cut timber and prepared it to be hauled back to Baker. It was on one of these trips he would meet Carol Rose in 1935. Uncle John joined the United States Army on September 3, 1942. He was sent to Lincoln, NE where he learned to be an airplane mechanic. From there he was sent to California where he learned the operation of the B-25 twin-engine bomber. For a brief period, he patrolled off the coast of Florida with an anti-sub unit. Uncle John eventually was assigned to the 676th Bomber Squadron as a crew chief for the B-29?s. He served in the India-China Theater and on the Mariana Islands. He was honorably discharged on October 10, 1945 with the rank of Technical Sergeant. After ten long years in hot pursuit of Carol Rose, he finally caught her and the two were married in Baker on May 25, 1946. Together they farmed five miles west of Baker until 1972. Having sold the farm to Stan Erlenbush, Uncle John and Carol moved into Baker where they continued to make their home. Uncle John worked for Jack Bethel at the Baker Airport as an airplane mechanic. He also worked for Byron Wolenetz. Uncle John had many hobbies including flying, which took him to Fort Worth, TX where he took a crash course to obtain his pilots license. He then purchased his own airplane. Uncle John enjoyed woodworking and traveling. His travels took him to Hawaii, Mariana Islands, Japan, Bali, Sidney Australia, New Zeeland, Hong Kong, Okinawa, Taiwan, Indonesia, Tahiti and many of the States here in America. He also liked to loaf, doze in his recliner and be around people. Uncle John?s real love was for his wife Carol, and for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He enjoyed sharing his testament and the way of salvation to those, he met.

John passed away Tuesday evening, December 12, 2006 at Quality Personal Care in Baker. John is survived by his sister-in-law, Lillian (Ervin) Schelske, Glendive, MT, his brother-in-law, Norman Lang, Baker, MT; numerous Nieces, Nephews and his Church family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Elizabeth Karch, his best friend and wife, Carol, his brother, Charley Karch and his sisters, Elizabeth Karch, Bertha Karch, Ida Follmer and Viola Lang.
