This is a tribute and special thank you from the Leiss family to the people of the Dickinson area for all the things you did for Johnny Leiss. Johnny was the area?s number one sports fan. We are so thankful for the way you treated Johnny over all these years. Additionally, we are thankful to all the local teams that awarded Johnny with all of the t-shirts, jackets and lifetime passes. Johnny really appreciated these and they made him feel like part of the team. Johnny stopped cheering for all his favorite teams Friday evening, December 29th at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Health Center, after a six-week battle with cancer. Johnny was born May 26, 1944. Johnny attended first and second grade at the Gladstone Elementary School. He then attended the Grafton State School for a year and a half before returning to live with Mom and Dad Leiss in Gladstone. He was a fan of the Gladstone Hornets and most major league baseball teams. Johnny was a big fan of the Yankees. In 1973 Johnny moved with his parents to Dickinson. Mom and Dad Leiss were concerned with how the Dickinson community would accept Johnny. No need to worry as people treated Johnny so nice? giving him rides to and from games. Johnny loved to dance with women of all ages. Although Johnny did not drink alcoholic beverages, he spent a lot of time visiting Dickinson area bars. He made countless friends in these establishments that looked after his best interests. He even worked at the Shamrock for over twenty years and took great pride in his job. He was a wonderful uncle who loved to give special treats and gifts to his nieces and nephews. Surviving are his mother, Lillian Leiss; brothers, Lee and wife Darlene, Bruce and wife Renae, all of Dickinson; brother, Alan and wife Lynn of Minneapolis. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John and his brother, Dwight and sister Lois.
