Jorine G. Burkhardt was born March 3, 1924 in Dickinson to Borge and Hannah (Mjolhus) Frafjord. She grew up on a farm near Golden Valley, ND along with her other six siblings, Helen, Ervin, Thorman ?Terry?, Ester, Alice and Donald. She attended Golden Valley High School. After getting a teaching certificate from Dickinson State College, during World War II she got a job as a school teacher at a country school not far from the Matt Crowley ranch. While there she met and married Adolph Burkhardt who worked on the Crowley ranch. In 1947 they purchased a ranch about eight miles south of Medora, ND. It was here that they raised their four children, Sharon, Garret, Barry and Peggy. The ranch was a popular place for friends and family, especially during hunting season. It was during this time that the hunters got their first taste of Jorine?s famous pancake syrup. Over the years more people came to enjoy the syrup than to actually hunt. Jorine was very active in the Medora Lutheran Church and served as an officer and on the Board of Trustees for the Badlands Bible Camp located south of Medora. After selling the ranch, Adolph and Jorine moved to Medora and built a home just outside of town on the way to the Burning Hills Ampatheater. For a couple of years Jorine worked for the National Park Service in Medora, greeting tourists and telling them of the history of Medora and south-west North Dakota. She is survived by: her four children, Garret (Kris) Burkhardt, Valley Center, KS, Barry Burkhardt, Centerville, UT, Sharon (Ron) Berndt, Snyder, TX, and Peggy (Mike) Scanson, Livingston, MT; six grandchildren, Jeff Berndt, Jodi Stockett, Justin Scanson, Ward Scanson, Philip Burkhardt, Stephanie Burkhardt; two great-grandchildren, Luke Stockett and Camryn Scanson and care giver Karen Myers, Dickinson; two brothers Ervin and Terry; and three sisters, Helen, Ester and Alice. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Adolph; one great-grandson, John Stockett; her parents, Borge and Hannah, and a brother, Donald. The family suggests memorials to Badlands Ministry or a memorial of choice.
