Joseph Baar was born on September 14, 1924, the son of Frank and Teresa (Huth) Baar Sr., on the family farm 9 miles southwest of Gladstone while the rest of the family attended Sunday Mass.

He completed elementary school at a nearby rural school. He then attended Central High School for two years and Model High School for most of his junior year.

Since his brothers were called into service, he had to quit his formal education and work on the family farm.

Joe was called into service on April 1, 1946, at Fort Snelling, Minn. He completed his basic training at Camp Polk, La., and then was shipped to the Shemya Islands in the Aleutians in Alaska.

He spent one year there in a warehouse handling mechanical parts for trucks. He lived in a Quonset hut with three others and remembers only seeing the sun once because it was always so foggy. This was the first time he had ever been away from home.

He was discharged on September 3, 1947 at Fort Lowston, WA.

On October 14, 1947, Joe and Kathryn Wehner were united in marriage at the St. Thomas Catholic Church. He and Kathryn lived in Gladstone and raised their two daughters, Colleen and Jody. He worked construction his entire life and helped construct St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson and the Garrison Dam.

Joe and Kathryn moved to Dickinson on December 15, 2007, to be closer to their girls.

Joe was a member of the Gladstone Knights of Columbus, Gladstone City Council, Gladstone Fire Department and a member and president of the Gladstone Senior Center.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughters, Jody (David) Kostelecky, and Colleen (Alan) Moore-Reed, all of Dickinson; grandchildren, Robb (Heidi) Moore, Beulah, Chantal (Alan) McMurtrey, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Derek (Tanya) Kostelecky, Bismarck, Trista (Craig) Lynner, Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Cody (Lindsey) Kostelecky, Bismarck; and 13 great-grandchildren, Brayden and Carson Moore, Kiley and Alexis McMurtrey, Taylor, Dylan, Devon and Tesha Kostelecky, Brynn, Chloe and Camden Lynner and Cadence and Sydney Kostelecky; and brother, Edward (Veronica) Baar of Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Teresa Baar; brothers, Frank, Carl, Albert, Emil, Dick; and sisters, Rose Albertson, Marie Walth, Katherine Gutenkunst, Theresa Gutenkunst, Ann Wehner; and son-in-law, Ronald Moore.
