Funeral mass for Joseph Frank Fichter, 75, of New England will be Monday, August 13, 2007, 10:00 a. m. at St. Mary?s Catholic Church, New England with Fr. Basil Atwell O. S. B. celebrating. Military Rites will be by the Anton Ulijohn Post #66 of New England. Internment will be Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at the North Dakota Veteran?s Cemetery, Mandan, ND at 1:00 p. m. (central time). Visitation will be Saturday, August 11, 2007, 1:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson continuing on Sunday from 9:00 a. m. to 9:00 p. m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p. m. at the chapel of Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson. Visitation will continue Monday one hour prior to the service at St. Mary?s Catholic Church, New England. Joe passed away August 8, 2007 at Ft. Meade Veterans Hospital, Sturgis, SD. Joe was born December 29, 1931 the son of Christ and Margaret (Roll) Fichter on the Fichter farm 20 miles north of Taylor. He attended country grade school 1 mile south of the homestead. In August of 1952 Joe entered the U. S. Army and was based at Sapporo, Hakkaido, Japan during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge in the fall of 1954 he began work at the Homestake Mining Co. at Deadwood, SD. In the fall of 1957, he met Frances Krehlik. They were united in marriage August 25, 1958 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dickinson. To this union four children were born. Joe worked at Paul?s Standard Service Station from 1957 til 1961, at which time they purchased Joe?s Standard Service Station in New England, ND. Due to health issues, Joe was forced to sell the station in June of 1971. After this time, he drove school bus for 5 years. They bought the laundromat in New England and ran it for several years and also bought the J & F Motel in July of 1969 and continue to own & operate it until the early 1980?s. In the fall of 1978, Joe began working as a welder for Koffler Manufacturing in New England until becoming disabled in 1989. Joe?s hobbies include gardening, fishing, boating and water skiing, camping with family and friends during the summer months and snowmobiling in the winter. Joe also had a fondness for trains of all types. He especially enjoyed the times spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church. Joe is survived by his wife; Frances, New England; one son; Allen (Lisa) Fichter, Dickinson; three daughters; Wanda (Steve) Ott, Red Wing, MN; Jonelle (Brian) Cavallero, Spearfish, SD and Mary Roberts, Bozeman, MT. three brothers; Alex( Beatrice) Fichter, Kalispell, MT, Richard (Luella) Fichter,Dickinson, ND, Paul Fichter, Dickinson. three sisters; Isabelle (George) Messmer, Deadwood, SD; Josie Heinert, Dickinson, Agnes Kersich, Dickinson; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by: his parents and one sister; Mary Catherine.
