Joseph P. Krank, 89, Dickinson, died Saturday, December 24, 2005, at St. Benedict?s Health Center, Dickinson. Funeral services will be 10 a. m. Thursday, December 29, 2005, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson with Fr. Jerry Kautzman, officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph?s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be Wednesday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home from 12 noon to 9 p. m. Visitation will continue on Thursday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home one hour prior to the service. Joseph P. Krank was born February 18, 1916, in Dickinson to Philip and Clementine (Frank) Krank. He attended Dickinson High School and graduated from Dickinson State Teachers College in 1941, with a major in composite science and mathematics. Joe then attended and graduated from The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif. , where he majored in Meteorology. He was a meteorologist at Albuquerque, New Mexico and then transferred to Anchorage, Alaska for eight years. Joe then transferred to Arlington National Airbase in Washington, D. C. In 1957, he was appointed to the staff of the International Geophysical Year Meteorological Program in the Antarctic. Their base was 800 miles from the South Pole at the Little America Station, where they studied weather patterns. He retired from the U. S. National Weather Bureau in 1973. After retirement, he moved to Luray, Virginia where he had a farm and hunting lodge. Joe hunted moose and bear in Alaska and deer in Virginia. He was also an avid golfer. In 2003, he moved to Mankato, Minn. and in 2005 to Dickinson. He is survived by: four nieces: Ethelrita Krank, Dickinson, Allene (Jim) Grandey, Roseville, CA. , Judy (Ray) Williams, Mankato, MN, and Peggy (Terry) Degele, Dickinson; great nieces and nephews, Kathleen (Curtis) Leavitt, Folsom, CA. , Cheryl (Matt) Matter, Simi Valley, CA. , Jason (Julie) Degele, Havre, MT, Greg (Amber) Degele, Williston, ND, Rebecca and Jim Williams, Mankato, MN; great-great nieces and nephews, Brittany and Courtney Leavitt, Folsom, CA. , Ryan and Kyle Matter, Simi Valley, CA. ; Jacob, Joelle and Jaryn Degele, Havre, MT. and Madison Degele, Williston, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
