Joseph passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the Hill Top Home of Comfort in Killdeer, ND. Joseph Schollmeyer was born October 30, 1928 in Dunn Center, the son of James and Bertha (Dohrner) Schollmeyer. He grew up in the Dunn Center area and attended Longfellow #1 country school. In 1951 he was inducted in the US Army and served his country during the Korean War. In 1953, Joseph was honorably discharged and returned to the Dunn Center area to begin farming with his father and brother Alfred. Joseph continued to work on the farm until the summer of 2009, when he slowed down due to health reasons. Joseph enjoyed keeping the coal mine active for over 80 years and was one of the last demolition experts in Dunn County. He learned the art of stone mason work from his father and could install a foundation without cement. Joseph and his brother, Alfred, were partners all their lives and always stood by each other. They hoped they would be able to leave the community they worked in and live in a better place. Joseph was considered a walking history buff and kept meticulous records of all accounts. Joseph is survived by one brother, Alfred Schollmeyer, Dunn Center; numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Albert, James, Charles, Henry and Louie Schollmeyer and one sister, Lucille Krieger.
