A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 22, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England ND with Father Dennis Schafer celebrating.  Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New England.

Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m., - 6:00 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Stevenson Funeral Home, 2067 1st St West Dickinson, with a rosary and vigil service being held at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will follow an hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Josephine “Josie” (Sticka) Steier, 89, formerly of New England ND, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022 at St Benedicts Health Center Dickinson ND. 

Josie was born on July 20, 1932, on the family farm near Schefield ND in Stark County, the second child of John L and Margaret (Kuntz) (Sticka) Miller.  She graduated from St Pius Grade School, Schefield in 1946, and St Mary’s High School, New England in 1950.

On June 12, 1951, she married Vincent Steier at St. Pius Church, Schefield.  Vince and Josie, along with their twelve sons, farmed and ranched north of New England.  She also worked as a cook at St Mary’s School and the bowling alley-café in New England.

She was fond of baking, planting flowers, gardening, quilting, crocheting and sewing.  She was not fond of swimming and boating, snakes, and cottage cheese.  She was dedicated to her faith, family, and friends.

Josie is survived by twelve sons, Curtis (Carol), Bismarck ND, Conrad (Charlotte), Fargo ND, Gerry (Dorma), Bismarck, Neal (Arva), Dickinson, Lynn, Cherokee OK, Gordon (Linda), Enid OK, Elwood, New England, Ted (Beth) Tuttle OK, Jon (Carrie) Surrey ND, Lee (Korene), Dickinson, Myron (Kara) Baldwin ND, and Bob (Holly), Dickinson; 27 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; siblings, Agnes Frank, Belfield ND, Rosemary Gartner, Kent WA, Benjamin (Verlene), Dickinson, Margaret (Edward) Frank, Lincoln ND, Joan Stenehjem and Hildegard Pavlish, Dickinson, John (Sue), Pryor OK, Edwin (Renae), Dickinson; in laws-Victoria Herberholz, New England, Dorothy Steier, Geneva Steier, Leah (Victor) Wanner, and Jean Sticka, all of Dickinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vincent; her parents, John L and Margaret (Kuntz) (Sticka) Miller; siblings, Henry and Dennis; in laws, Gabriel Frank, William Pavlish, Jerome Stenehjem, Marjorie Sticka, Raymond Gartner, Harvey Herberholz, Bernadette and Dale Knott, Rosemary and John Fisher, Clemens and Fred Steier; grandson, Derek Steier; and one infant son.
 
In lieu of plants and flowers Josie would prefer that you planted some.  Memorials are preferred to:  St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 437 Main St, New England, ND 58647.
