Funeral Mass for Karen Marie Allen will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 2, 2011 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson, ND with Father Todd Kreitinger celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson, ND. A light luncheon/gathering will follow the burial at the Henry Allen Farm.
Karen Marie Allen passed away at age 62, alone at her home at 533 Alder St., Arroyo Grande, CA on March 14, 2011. She died from complications of lung failure.
Local family services were held in California at the time of her death.
Karen was born to Elizabeth (Betty) M. (Braun) (1924-03) and William (Bill) Houck (1923-49), on April 27, 1948 in Dickinson, ND. Karen’ biological father, Bill, died one year later of cancer and her mom, Betty, married Henry E. Allen (1925-2011) in 1951. She was legally adopted by Henry and therefore carried her Allen name thereafter. While growing up, Karen had four sets of living grandparents: Paul/MaryEva Braun, John/Mary Froelich, Webster/Hazel Allen, and Jessie/Lizzy Houck. Karen attended St. Patrick’s grade school and graduated with honors from Trinity High School (1966) in Dickinson, ND. She loved playing the piano and was also an avid reader, often reading a book a day! She attended Carroll Catholic College in Helena, MT from 1966-1968 to study nursing. After college, Karen worked as a dental hygienist. While her children were in grade school, Karen served as a room mother at St. Patrick Elementary Grade School in Arroyo Grande, CA. She was also employed as a licensed agent with Allstate Insurance for 23 years for her long time friends, Gary and Chris Borda. In 1970, Karen married Jerry Kaufmann and while together, they had two sons, Jason and Jeremy.
Surviving Karen are her two sons, daughter-in-law Tesa, and four grandchildren, Morgan, Garrik (Jason and Tesa) and Cyanna and Kaya (Jeremy).
Memorial Donations may be made to Stevenson Funeral Home to be used to help defray the cost of funeral services.
