A funeral service for Kasimer “Sonny” Schmalz, 86, of Dickinson, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with Pastor Lisa Lewton officiating. Burial will take place in the Killdeer Cemetery.
Family Receiving Friends will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson.
Sonny passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson.
Kasimer “Sonny” Roy was born January 7, 1931 in Killdeer, the son of Kasimer and Matilda (Hartman) Schmalz. He grew up on the family farm near Fayette, ND where he attended country school. Sonny worked on the family farm for several years before enlisting in the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged he returned home to North Dakota. During this time he met Evelyn Serhienko and the two were united in marriage on June 12, 1956, in Killdeer. They made their home in the Killdeer area and it was there that they raised their two sons, Monte and Mitchell. Sonny enjoyed farming and ranching for many years. After Evelyn passed away in 1996, Sonny eventually retired to Dickinson, and later lived at Hawks Point.
Sonny was very social and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, taking several trips to Alaska. He was a member of the Dickinson 7

Calvary participating in countless parades and special events.
Sonny is survived by his sons, Monte (Jan) of Manning, ND and Mitchell (Deb) of Iowa City, IA; sister, Mathilda “Tillie” Dauenhauer of Missoula, MT; three grandchildren, Kendra (Michael) Teubner of Thief River Falls, MN, Callen of Columbus, IN, and Kendall of Rapid City, SD; and great-granddaughter, Ana Teubner.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Kasimer and Matilda; wife, Evelyn; an infant baby boy; brothers, John, Ralph, and Lee; sisters, Eva, Caroline, Barbara and Rose.
