Funeral Services for Katherine Dutchuk, 95, of Dickinson will be 10:00 a. m. , Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at St. John?s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Belfield with Father Taras Miles celebrating. Burial will follow at St. John?s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. , Monday, July 5, 2010, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a Rosary at 7:00 p. m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, for one hour prior to the service at St. John?s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Belfield. Katherine departed from this life Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at St. Benedict?s Health Center in Dickinson with her family at her side. Katherine ?Katie? Dutchuk was born on January 31, 1915, at Grassy Butte, the first child born to Dan and Polly (Kopichuk) Cerkoney. She was raised on a farm near Ukraina, ND, and went to a country school until the fourth grade. She had to help her mother take care of the younger children, and help her grandma, Mary Kopichuk, wash clothes with a wash board. Katie also helped with many other chores, including feeding and milking cows and other duties that pertained to farming. She even helped to bake bread. Katie was 22 when she met Nickolas Dutchuk, the son of Bella and Steve Dutchuk. They were married on August 3, 1937, at the St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church at Ukraina, ND. To this union, they had three children: Carrie, Jeanette, and Theodore. Nickolas and Katie farmed north of Belfield for several years, and then moved into Belfield for a short time. They later moved to Dickinson and called it home for about sixty years. Katie entered St. Benedict?s Health Center in April 1998. The kitchen was the heart of the home for Katie. She was a gifted cook for her family and for many restaurants in Dickinson. Her favorite restaurant was her daughter and son-in-law?s, Jack and Carrie Wandler?s, restaurant, which is known as Jack?s Restaurant. She spent twenty-seven years cooking in this restaurant. Katie?s outstanding cooking came to the attention of the American Broadcasting Company, and her borscht soup was featured live on the Good Morning America television show. Katie enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, canning and listening to Ukrainian music. Her greatest pleasure was visiting and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. John?s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Belfield and the Eagles Auxiliary. Katie is survived by her children, Carrie (Jack) Wandler, Dickinson, ND, Jeanette Bachar, Hosington, KS, and Theodore (Vicki) Dutchuk, Port Townsend, WA; grandchildren, Craig (Amanda) Wandler, Todd (Karol) Wandler, Brent (Ronda) Wandler, Jay (Jenn) Wandler, Jerad Bachar, Jerry Bachar, Jay Bachar, Jodi Bachar, Michelle Dutchuk, Tammy Dutchuk, Natasha Dutchuk and Demetria Dutchuk; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Agnes Palanuk, Dickinson, ND; one brother, Mike Cerkoney, Wilbur, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nickolas; her parents, Dan and Polly (Kopichuk) Cerkoney; four brothers, Bill, Marvin, Sam and Emil; and four sisters, Mary, Josie, Ann and Molly.
