Katherine Griffin

Funeral Service for Katherine (Jaeger) Griffin, 94 will be held at 10:00 a. m. , Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Stevenson?s Funeral Home in Dickinson. Burial will follow at St. Joseph?s Cemetery. Katherine passed away March 1, 2009 in Tualatin, OR. Katherine (Kate/Kay) was born September 18, 1914 to Anton and Mary Eva (Schmidt) Jaeger on the family farm near Fayette, North Dakota. She joined a sister, Rosalie, and later welcomed 5 other siblings, Magdalene, Eva, Anton, Agnes and Carl. She attended a country school two miles from the farm. Upon finishing school she continued to help her parents on the farm for a number of years. She then moved to Killdeer to work at the IGA store, followed by a move to Dickinson where she worked at the J. C. Penney store ? a delightful job for her as she liked everything about the retail business. It was at that time that she met her future husband, Herb Griffin. While Herb was away in the Pacific during the war, Katherine moved to San Francisco where she worked until her marriage there on March 8, 1943. In the years that followed, Katherine became the mother to three children, James, Mary and Kathy. Montana became her home for the next twenty years, followed by time spent in Utah, Washington State and finally, Oregon. In spite of being away from her birthplace for so many years, she enjoyed a lifelong connection with the many relatives she grew up with in North Dakota. Katherine was well-liked by everyone she met because of her respectful, kind and quiet nature. She was deeply committed to the welfare of her immediate family, creating a loving and nurturing home with her husband, Herb. During her lifetime she served as a community volunteer and was valued not only for her reliability and hard work, but especially for her sense of honor, her insight and genuine warmth. She enjoyed her family, traveling, cooking, gardening, sewing, nature, and learning new things. She was open to the world, its joys and sorrows, and truly loved being alive. Each day for her was a blessing and a miracle. She is survived by her children, five grandchildren, Johan, Erik, Michael, Katherine and Thom, and two great grandchildren, Paul and Ian. Katherine was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Herb, and her sisters Rosalie and Eva.
