Katherine was born August 28, 1915 in Hettinger County, the daughter of Frank and Magdalena (Lenhardt) Schummer. She grew up and attended country school through the eighth grade and then worked as a housemaid. Katie met and married Mathew Heiser on February 5, 1935 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New England, ND. A few years later, the couple moved to a farm north of Dickinson. Katie and Mathew were blessed with four children, George, Frank, Harvey and Darlene, who they raised on the farm. In November 1963, they moved to Dickinson. Katie worked at Roosevelt Elementary School as a cook and she volunteered at the ARC Aid. Faith was very important to Katie and the highlight of her day was attending Mass. She also loved to knit, making afghans and embroidering dozens and dozens of dish towels. Katie’s hand-stitched quilts were treasured by her children and grandchildren. Those quilts and the love with which they were made, provides much warmth for her family. Katie raised a bountiful garden and she will always be remembered for her canned pickles, noodles, cinnamon rolls and during the holiday season, the tradition of making ‘pig ears’. She died as she lived, with dignity and grace. Katie is survived by her sons, George Heiser of Bend, OR, Frank Heiser of Lewistown, ID, and Harvey (Jo Ann) Heiser of Dickinson; daughter, Darlene Leiss of Dickinson; 11 grandchildren, Dani Heiser, Terry Heiser, Randy Heiser, Darci Netz, Curt (Lisa) Heiser, Tracy (Pam) Heiser, Jeralyn (Paul Hartmann) Heiser, Russ (Cara Lee) Heiser, Kent Leiss, Shawn (Laura) Leiss, Honey (John) Sayler; 15 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
