Katherine McConnell

Funeral Services for Katherine McConnell, 97, of Killdeer, ND, will be 10:00 a. m. , Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the Normanna Lutheran Church in Dunn Center, ND, with Pastor Joel Sauerwein officiating. Burial will follow at the Dunn Center Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. , Friday, July 16, 2010, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Killdeer. Visitation will continue on Saturday, July 17, 2010, for one hour prior to the service at Normanna Lutheran Church in Dunn Center. Katherine passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson. Katherine Martian McConnell was born April 6, 1913, to Philip and Anna (Schropp) Martian on the family farm northwest of Belfield in Billings County, North Dakota. She grew up on the farm and attended the Martian Country School. After schooling, Katherine stayed on the farm and helped raise her younger siblings after her mother passed away. On June 22, 1938, she married Walter McConnell at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church at Belfield. After marriage, the couple lived on a farm near Emerson and shortly after moved to the McConnell homestead. The couple farmed and ranched there until moving to Dunn Center in 1955 when they purchased the Dunn Center Hotel. In 1962, they moved back to the farm where Katherine resided until moving to Dickinson in 1970. While in Dickinson, she worked at Lee?s Truck Stop and the City Caf?. In 1972, she purchased a house in Dunn Center, where she resided until October 2005, when she moved to the Hilltop Home of Comfort in Killdeer. Katherine loved to bake, garden, quilt, sew, and attend church. She was a member of Normanna Lutheran Church and enjoyed going to WELCA and Stone Croft Bible Study. She always had a treat and coffee for anyone who stopped over. She was always concerned about her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and teaching them how to bake. Katherine is survived by three children, Adeline (Rodney) Thompson, Dunn Center, ND, Leona (Clair) Kittilson, Dunn Center, ND, and Ervin (Karen) McConnell, Gladstone, ND; a daughter-in-law, Diane McConnell, Dickinson, ND; a sister, Rose Nelson, Dickinson, ND; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Martian, Beach, ND; eight grandchildren, Brenda (Jay) Bertsch, Diane (Gary) Carson, Michael (Linda) Kittilson, Shari (Wade) Barnes, Troy (Anne) McConnell, Tracy McConnell, Dustin McConnell, and Darci (Jon) Karau; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; a son, Dale; four brothers; four sisters; and a grandson, Keith Thompson.
