A Parastas for Katherine Palaniuk, 96, of Belfield will be held on Friday, August 31, 2007 at 10:00 a. m. , at St. John?s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Belfield with Father Taras Miles celebrating. Burial will be in the St. Mary?s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, North of Belfield. Visitation will be held from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. Thursday at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a rosary being said at 7:00 p. m. at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson. Katherine passed away on Monday, August 27, 2007 at the Marion Manor in Glen Ullin, ND. Katherine Basaraba was born on March 10, 1911, the daughter of John and Ann (Malkowski) Basaraba on the family homestead in the Gorham area. She attended Gorham School until her help was needed on the family farm. On June 11, 1929, she married Steve J. Palaniuk in the St. Josephat?s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Gorham. For the next 40 plus years they spent on their farm where they raised their five children. Summer found Katie tending her big garden and canning the harvested produce. She was known for her very tasty dill pickles. During the sometimes long North Dakota winters, Katie would do embroidery work. She was active in her church and sang in the church choir for many years. She especially enjoyed participating in the Ukrainian Christmas caroling tradition. Katherine is survived by her five children: Sy (Eva) Palaniuk, Los Gatos, CA, Betty (Pete) Cassidy, Sacramento, CA, Rose Richey, Las Vegas, NV, Orest (Sharon) Palaniuk, Couer D?Alene, ID and Theresa (Bill) Holzer, Bismarck, ND; 11 grandchildren, 2- step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 sisters, a brother, a grandson and a son-in-law, Bud Richey. Memorials may be given to the perpetual care of St. Mary?s Ukrainian Cemetery.
